The circuit-breaker protects circuits against overloads and short-circuits, while the earth leakage switch detects leakage currents to protect people against electric shocks. These two functions can be combined in a single device known as an earth leakage circuit breaker (elcb).

The tripping curve defines how quickly a circuit breaker cuts the circuit in the event of an overcurrent. Curve B is suitable for conventional residential circuits, curve C is standard for most domestic and tertiary uses, and curve D is reserved for equipment with high inrush currents (motors, transformers).

Type AC detects sinusoidal alternating leakage currents only. Type A also detects pulsed and rectified currents, making it mandatory for circuits supplying electronic equipment, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps or modern washing machines.

Since the revision of standard NF C 15-100, lightning arresters are mandatory for all new or renovated installations where the power supply network is overhead or mixed, or where the keraunic level in the area is high. It is highly recommended in all installations to protect sensitive electronic equipment.

Replacing a modular circuit-breaker is technically accessible to the experienced diy enthusiast, provided that safety instructions are followed (cut off upstream power supply, check residual voltage). Any work on the service circuit breaker or main switchboard must be carried out by a qualified professional.

The rating of the earth leakage switch must be greater than or equal to the sum of the ratings of all the circuit breakers it protects. In residential applications, 40 A differentials are generally used for circuits up to 20 A, and 63 A for higher-power circuits (stoves, charging stations).

Standard NF C 15-100 requires 30 mA residual current protection for all socket-outlet circuits in residential premises. This sensitivity ensures protection against electric shock in the vast majority of accidental contact situations.

A differential block is an accessory that fits onto an existing modular circuit-breaker to add a differential protection function. It can be used to convert a conventional circuit-breaker into an earth leakage circuit-breaker (elcb) without having to replace the device, which can be very economical when retrofitting an existing switchboard.
