Presentation of the NF C14-100 standard

Electrical standards help meet safety requirements to protect people and property and prevent the risk of fire, electrocution, or serious accidents. They are involved throughout the entire electricity distribution process, starting from the point of generation (nuclear power plant, hydroelectric dam, wind turbine, etc.)) to the end-use point (light bulb, household appliance, etc.). The NF C14-100 standard is part of this initiative and provides a framework for those involved in electrical installations.

What is the NF C14-100 standard?
The NF C14-100 standard was developed by the UTE (Union Technique de l'Électricité), which is now part of AFNOR (Association Française de Normalisation). The purpose of this standard is to ensure the safety of low-voltage electrical installations, covering aspects such as design, installation, maintenance, and operation.
Like other standards, it provides a framework for the installation of electrical networks and systems and bridges the gap between the upstream standard NF C11-201 (public electrical power distribution networks) and the well-known downstream standard NF C15-100 (low-voltage electrical installations) downstream, governing the implementation and safety rules for electrical installations in residential buildings.
Regulatory changes to the NF C14-100 standard
Since its initial publication, the NF C14-100 standard has undergone several revisions to keep pace with technological advances and new safety requirements. Each update incorporates feedback and technical innovations to ensure it remains in step with the current needs of electrical systems.
The version published in june 2021, which is currently in effect, supersedes and replaces all previous versions:
- February 2008: the original version NF C 14-100,
- March 2011, august 2014, march 2016: Amendments A1 through A3,
- December 2011, april 2012, november 2014, january 2016: the NF C 14-100 interpretation sheets F1, F2, F3, F4,
- September 2012: UTE C 14-101 guide and summary guide of the regulations in effect as of june 21, 2012, relating to the NF C 14-100 standard
Scope of application of the NF C14-100 standard
The scope of the NF C14-100 standard extends from the point of connection to the grid to the delivery point(s) at the premises of residential and commercial customers. This standard is primarily intended for Enedis employees (who are the only ones authorized to perform work on these installations), which is why it is relatively unknown to the general public.
Systems can be sized for a load of up to 400 A for individual connections (single-site) or shared connections (with multiple delivery points).
Scope of application of the NF C14-100 standard
Objectives of NFC 14-100
The scope of the standard has evolved with each successive publication and primarily covers the following areas:
- Connection of a new building or any other structure to the national power grid
- Modification and maintenance of electrical systems in existing buildings (particularly in the common areas of apartment buildings)
- Installation of electric meters
- change in the electrical characteristics of the subscriber's connection (three-phase)
The different types of connections
Depending on the location of the endpoint, there are two types of connections:
- Type 1: delivery point on the end-user's premises (single-family home, small commercial building, etc.,..). The maximum distance between an individual main circuit breaker (CCPI) or a collective main circuit breaker (CCPC) is 30 meters.
- Type 2: delivery point outside the end user's premises. The CCPI is typically installed in a cabinet at the property line, along with the AGCP (General control and protection Unit).
The available power ratings for low-voltage connections are: 12 kVA and 18 kVA for single-phase, and 36 kVA for three-phase.
How can i obtain the NF C14-100 standard?
The full text of the NF C14-100 standard is available from AFNOR at the following address:https://www.boutique.afnor.org/fr-fr/norme/nf-c14100/installations-de-branchement-a-basse-tension/fa192206/261079
Conclusion
The NF C14-100 standard is one link in the chain of standards governing the distribution of electrical energy in France. It provides a framework and set of procedures to ensure the safety, reliability, and compliance of low-voltage electrical installations between the distribution network and the delivery point.
Compliance with these regulations helps prevent accidents and ensures a high-quality, uninterrupted electricity supply. This standard also addresses current needs such as the injection of self-generated electricity into the grid, connections to electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and the distribution of electricity throughout the country.
